Description

The University Research Symposium is a competitive program that sponsors selected SAMPE student members to present the results of their technical research at CAMX each year. There are categories for Senior undergraduates, Masters and Doctoral candidates. The best papers in each student category are awarded cash prizes, while winners in the PhD category are further sponsored to present their papers at SAMPE conferences in Europe or Japan.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Applicants may not be an award winner in more than one SAMPE student program at CAMX 2024.  
  • Applicants must be SAMPE members and full-time students (12 credits per term minimum) in residence working on thesis or dissertation research, or part-time students with a minimum of 5 credits per term and full-time work (minimum of 1600 hours on the job in 2022-2023).
  • Applicants cannot compete in a category if they have already won 1st place in that category previously.

CLASSIFICATION: Applicants will be competing in one of three categories based on their status at the application deadline date: 

  • B.S - Senior – Students having completed 90 semester hours, or 135 quarter hours at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or engineering technology. 
  • M.S. – Students who have not defended their MS thesis or MS research project by application deadline 
  • Ph.D. – Students who have completed a Master’s degree or more than 24 months of graduate work.

AWARDS: The criteria for selecting the semi-finalist include:

  • Leadership - 10%
  • Scholarship - 20%
  • Innovative ability in research and capability in curricular affairs -25%
  • Activity in student and community affairs - 15%
  • Communication Skills - 20%
  • Growth potentials - 10%

Failure to address these criteria in the student's essay and recommendation letters will severely penalize the applicant. Semifinalists will be asked to submit a technical paper. Three to six finalists will be selected from each category based on the above criteria and the technical paper quality.

Finalist will be invited to the CAMX expo (travel and lodging will be paid by SAMPE), where they will present papers and compete in their respective categories for cash awards of up to $1,000 or a trip to SAMPE Europe, SAMPE Japan or SAMPE China conferences.

Finalist are required to attend the CAMX Conference.

  • September 9 -12 - Attend URS and CAMX 2024 San Diego, CA  for competition and presentation  September 9 - 12, 2024
